![]() And the rest of the world is overrun by zombies, and all they seem to do is fight each other. The time that this book is set seems to be in the very dark future, where there are only a few humans left, living in an old football stadium. Also I thought it was great that it was told from the point of view of R, the zombie, because in most zombie books they are seen as the bad guys - but R makes it very clear that he doesn't like hurting people, but he has to so he can survive. I really liked the way warm bodies was written. But their dark and hopeless world wont change without a fight. This unlikely bond will cause transformations they can't imagine. He wants to change, he wants to breath again. And something inside him begins to bloom. ![]() Julie is a blast of colour in R's grey landscape. ![]() He wants to keep her safe, so he takes her back home with him. The sender - whose knowledge of events seems to transcend the laws of time and space - may or may not live near the apartment Miranda shares with her mother on the Upper West Side of New York. ![]() Stead tells a cleverly plotted story about a bright 12-year-old named Miranda, who tries to decipher a series of mysterious and slightly ominous notes from an unknown sender in 1978–1979. Maybe it depends on how you define “distinguished.” By my lights, the ALA citation implies: “a book that will seem as great decades from now.” And I’m not convinced that When You Reach Me passes that test, or that Rebecca Stead will hold her own against Newbery winners like Russell Freedman ( Lincoln: A Photobiography) and Katherine Paterson ( Bridge to Terabithia, Jacob I Have Loved). ![]() But is it the year’s “most distinguished contribution” to children’s literature? That thing of value is based on your natural talent, skill, or interest-in other words, your passion! Similarly, a self-sufficient individual has something of value to exchange in the global marketplace. A self-sufficient economy has its own products or services of value to export to the world.
